El Monte’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

El Monte is actively implementing programs to enhance sustainability and address climate challenges.

Living Schoolyards Initiative

The El Monte City School District is transforming traditional asphalt schoolyards into shaded, garden-filled learning environments. This initiative aims to create cooler, more inviting spaces that support outdoor learning and healthier play. The project is underway at Cortada, Gidley, and Shirpser elementary schools, with plans to plant 187 new trees and establish 15 outdoor classrooms across 10.35 acres. These efforts not only provide educational benefits but also contribute to reducing the urban heat island effect and improving local air quality.

Clean Mobility Nexus Program

To promote sustainable transportation, El Monte has launched the Clean Mobility Nexus Program. This initiative introduces affordable services such as electric car-sharing, electric shuttles, and e-bikes, providing residents with practical and flexible travel options. The program also includes community events like “learn to bike” classes and e-bike demonstrations, fostering a culture of eco-friendly transportation.

Stormwater Urban Master Plan

El Monte is developing a Stormwater Urban Master Plan to improve water quality and manage urban runoff. The plan identifies potential projects to capture and retain stormwater, aiming to enhance local water quality, recharge groundwater, reduce the heat island effect, and increase recreational spaces. This comprehensive approach addresses both environmental and community needs.

Energy Efficiency Programs

The city is committed to improving energy efficiency as a crucial component of environmental sustainability. By conserving energy, El Monte aims to reduce the demand for fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and decrease air and water pollution. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in programs offered by SoCal Edison and partnerships with organizations like the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and the Southern California Regional Energy Network.

Recycling and Waste Management

El Monte’s Environmental Services Division oversees solid waste collection, hazardous waste management, and recycling programs. The city provides detailed information on waste disposal services, recycling programs, bulky item disposal, and proper management of hazardous wastes. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in these programs to promote environmental preservation and resource conservation.

Through these initiatives, El Monte demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being, setting a positive example for sustainable urban development.
